L.E.S.S

I feel like God has continued to bring me to new places in my faith through stretching and changing the things that have always kept me busy, comforted me or brought me happiness. The last few years have been a constant battle of lessening my love for things/stuff and growing my love for God. My clothes were the most recent place where He brought me through a major reduction to a place of peace and joy and now food has entered the mix.

As I was praying the other day about all the places God has been working in my life I felt like He clearly told me that THIS was His definition of LESS in my life. This definition is perfect and helps me keep my eyes on His goal, ┬áthat my satisfaction comes from Him alone. I’m sharing it with you in case it can help you move forward as well.

Clothing rePurposed

I ran across this blog by Denaye Barahona about building a capsule wardrobe. I have always thought something like this would be interesting but I honestly never thought I would part with my clothes or felt a need to do it. This time was different. It was almost if I had a deep longing for the simplicity this could bring to my life. Any area where I can simplify the decisions, the upkeep/cleaning is a win in my life, so I decided to give it a try. I even threw a challenge out on Facebook and to my amazement, other ladies seemed excited to join in.

Here is my before… this is embarrassing.

Lots of my clothes are things I have had for years, things I kept because they were gifts, things that fit me 7 years ago. So, the first step was to completely remove everything from my closet… much to my husbands chagrin.

Once it was laid out this way I realized just how much I had. So, the purging began… it was significantly easier than I expected and with every bag of clothing that went out my door to be donated it felt like I was losing 10lbs of weight off my heart. I can’t explain it but there is a weight to carrying all of this stuff around. Jesus said that if we had 2 of something to share one of them… I wasn’t meant to have this. much. stuff.

My final product is incredible. My options are simple and items I really love to wear, I generally have a weeks worth of professional wear with a few items thrown in that I can wear on the farm as well. It has been a month since I completed this and I can tell you that my clothing is significantly easier to keep up!

I feel like Jen Hatmaker would be proud (if you haven’t read her book Seven you need to, seriously).

The simplicity of this approach is so doable, for anyone. Would you be willing to give it a try?

Is God rePurposing you? Do you feel a weight on your heart when it comes to possessions, maybe it is the busyness of time or wisdom of financial decisions… whatever it is, allow Him to move. I promise whatever difficulty the process is will be worth the peace that comes once the work is done.

I’d love to cheer you on as you go, feel free to leave me a comment!
